A Note from the President

“Before action comes the dream—the genesis of every great enterprise. Genius resides in the imagination."

As James Champy and Nitin Nohria write in The Arc of Ambition, the 20th century was characterized by a series of new inventions and social developments that radically changed the world. It was a fantastic era of oil, computers, internet, and cell phones marked by a seemingly endless series of human achievements and boundless creativity.

Although there was more global cooperation, communication, and interaction than ever before, there were, of course, problems. Two world wars, recurring instances of genocide, and the crisis of environmental degradation will no doubt distinguish the past 100 years in many minds as a period of staggering abuses and violence.

But the 20th century is no more. It is now time to learn from the lessons of the past, to promote peace and improve living standards. A new era of development and human achievement has already arrived. Hopefully this period will be marked by improved global leadership, technology, and more sustainable development.

Here at GCC, we are setting out to achieve lofty goals. There are many obstacles in our path. But the only true impossibility is that which is never attempted.

I ask that you withhold your skepticism.  We believe we can surmount the obstacles that always confront dreamers. We believe we can contribute meaningfully to the policy debates that confront both West and East. We believe that we can help engineer greater global cooperation and prosperity. We hope you can join us.
